Background

Dr. Helen Crompton, originally from England, began her career in education with 13 years of classroom teaching experience. After relocating to the United States, she continued her work in U.S. schools for three years before earning a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education and Educational Technology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a Public Ivy institution.

She then joined Old Dominion University (ODU) in Virginia as a tenure-track faculty member. ODU, named after the state’s original title, is situated in a vibrant academic hub with seven other research universities across Virginia. Due to her prolific research contributions, Dr. Crompton was awarded early tenure in 2018 and promoted ahead of schedule to Full Professor in 2023. In recognition of her leadership in digital innovation, she was invited to establish and now serves as Executive Director of the Research Institute for Digital Innovation in Learning (RIDIL) at Old Dominion University, where she holds dual roles as professor and institute director.

Dr. Crompton’s research focuses on the effective integration of technology to improve and expand learning opportunities. Her expertise has led to consultancy and advisory roles for a range of organizations, including national governments, NGOs, companies, and leading universities. Her contributions include work with UNESCO, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Oxford University, Cambridge University, The World Bank, and USAID.

Her scholarly achievements have earned numerous honors. Dr. Crompton is consistently listed among the top 2% of scientists worldwide in Stanford University’s global rankings, including recognition for her career-long impact. The United Nations has formally recognized her as one of nine global experts in mobile learning.
