Dr. Helen Crompton is the Executive Director of the Research Institute for digital Innovation in Learning (RIDIL) at ODUGlobal and a Professor of Instructional Technology at Old Dominion University. With a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education and Technology in Education, she focuses her research on the effective integration of technology, such as artificial intelligence, mobile devices, and virtual/mixed/augmented reality.

Dr. Crompton is on Stanford’s list of the top 2% of scientists in the world.

Standards

Dr. Crompton’s research formed the foundation for the ISTE Standards for Faculty and the ISTE Standards for Educators. She led the development of these standards and authored the official ISTE booklets accompanying the standards for educators, education leaders, and technology coaches. Her work with ISTE continues to shape global benchmarks for effective and ethical technology use in education.

Artificial Intelligence

Dr. Crompton is a recognized pioneer in applying Artificial Intelligence (AI) to education. In 2017, she designed one of the world’s first AI courses specifically for teachers, followed in 2019 by the development of the first AI framework for the United Nations. She has since published extensively on the topic and created AI-focused professional development for educators across diverse disciplines and countries.

Keynotes

Dr. Crompton has delivered over 80 keynote and invited presentations in 23 countries across six continents. Her engagements include keynote addresses for the United Nations and featured talks at leading institutions such as Trinity College Dublin, Duke University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is widely recognized as a compelling speaker and influential voice in the field of educational innovation.

Dr. Crompton is internationally recognized for her expertise in artificial intelligence and technology integration. She consults with governments and organizations around the world, with clients including the United Nations, Oxford University, Cambridge University, UNHCR, Save the Children, and the World Bank. Other projects include collaborations with Google, Apple, USAID, and the University of London.

Dr. Crompton has contributed to international policy guidelines for the United Nations, supporting countries across low-, middle-, and high-income contexts. Her work focuses on leveraging technology to enhance learning, including in emergency and crisis-affected settings, helping shape global strategies for equitable and effective education.

Frameworks

Through her research, Dr. Crompton has developed several influential frameworks, including the Artificial Intelligence in K–12 framework for the United Nations and Ericsson. She also created the Social-Ecological Technology Integration (SETI) framework, which was presented by request to the governments of Germany, Luxembourg, and Greece to inform national policy and educational planning.
